Dear Coast: The Quirky Sauna in the Arctic Circle
Træna is home to one of the most unusual saunas in Norway. Træna Badstue is the result of a community effort to bring the island’s oldest boathouse back into use.
Here, we meet Anita and Siw, the friendly duo behind Hurtigruten’s Arctic Sauna and Swim excursion. In the summer, they guide intrepid – and cautious – guests between the heat of the wood-fired, candle-lit sauna in the boathouse and the chilly Norwegian Sea lapping the shore just outside.
Believe it or not, it’s a powerful way to de-stress and re-energise! It doesn’t take long to understand why Anita and Siw are so good at what they do, and why they won’t be leaving this spellbinding Arctic archipelago any time soon.
